Tiger I (German designation — Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger or simply Panzer VI) is a German heavy tank from World War II, one of the best-armored machines in military history. The project to develop a heavy tank for the German army was presented as early as 1937, but the first "T-VI" tank called "Tiger" rolled out of the factory in July 1942. The goal was to create a tank with strong armor and a powerful gun to outperform the Soviet KV-1 and KV-2 tanks. The chosen weapon was the 88-mm anti-aircraft gun "KwK 36 L/56," known for its great power and accuracy. Early in the war, the Germans also used it as an anti-tank gun capable of destroying any Soviet, British, or American tank from a long distance. Until 1942, no German tank had mounted such a large gun, and the existing Panzer III and Panzer IV could not be adapted to the 88-mm gun. Therefore, a completely new tank had to be developed. Initially, two prototypes were made by the companies Henschel and Porsche, with the main differences in suspension and running gear. Ultimately, preference was given to Henschel's Tiger, while Porsche's running gear was used for the development of the heavy tank destroyer "Ferdinand - Elephant." The first combat use of the "Tiger I" was in the battles near Leningrad on September 22, 1942, when one of the tanks was captured by Soviet forces. They were used more extensively in combat during Operation "Winter Storm" (during the Battle of Stalingrad) in December 1942 and at the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, where their performance was very good, although the Germans lost the battle. The German machine's 88-mm gun operated effectively at 1000 meters, penetrating 100 mm of armor and inflicting devastating damage on enemy vehicles. Russian crews were ordered to engage the "Tiger" at a ratio of 1 to 5 in favor of the Russians, while American and British tankers generally avoided encounters with it. There is a case where German Captain Wacker destroyed a Russian T-34/85 tank at a distance of 3900 meters. Other notable moments in battles involving the "Tiger I" include July 7, 1943, during the Battle of Kursk, when Franz Staudegger received intelligence about the movement of a group of 50-60 Soviet T-34 tanks. He attacked and destroyed 17 of them. The Soviet tanks retreated to regroup. Staudegger found them near a small river and destroyed another 5 before withdrawing after expending all his ammunition. The commander of a "Tiger" tank was also the most famous and successful tank ace, Captain Michael Wittmann. His most notable action was near the town of Villers-Bocage on June 13, 1944, one week after D-Day (the Normandy landings). Around 8:00 a.m., he attacked a British column, part of the 22nd Armored Brigade of the 7th Armored Division (the famous "Desert Rats"), destroying 5 Cromwell tanks, 1 Sherman, 3 Stuarts, and many other lightly armored vehicles and anti-tank guns. For this success, he was personally awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords by Hitler on June 25, 1944, becoming the highest-decorated tank ace of World War II.
